Steve Bruce explains to fans why Newcastle didn't sign a striker or move for Jarrod Bowen in January

Steve Bruce has insisted Newcastle United were unable to nail down a striker that would have bettered what they already have at the club.

A loan bid for Olivier Giroud of Chelsea was knocked back on the eve of deadline day despite that fact a move to Inter Milan fell through for the Frenchman.

United fans were keen to see Newcastle bid for Hull City's Jarrod Bowen arrive on Tyneside but the truth is the Magpies never really considered the Championship striker.

Bruce said today: "If you look through the whole frontline you can level it at us all.

"But that has been the case since August.

"But I don't think those out there are any better."

When asked more on the Giroud bid, Bruce said: "It was not possible."

Bruce is hopeful that his current strikers, Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto will all be back in time for the clash at Arsenal in the middle of next month.
