Steve Bruce delivers verdict on Longstaff midfield pairing

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has offered his verdict on the Longstaff brothers after the 2-1 defeat to Leicester City.

The Geordie duo were named in the side to face the Foxes for the first time together this season.

Bruce’s side are now without a win in six matches in all competitions and when asked about his selection, he said: "It was a big ask for Matty in particular to play three games in a week but they both stuck at it.

“Jonjo hasn't been right with his groin and Isaac was suspended so I went with the Longstaffs and I thought they did OK.”

Bruce was delighted to see Andy Carroll end his goal drought after 18 months without scoring.

He said: “I'm delighted for him. He's been a bit frustrated because he hasn't been in the team but he's come on and reminded us what he can do.

“It was a great finish.

“He gave us something else up front which is always good to have.”
