Steve Bruce delivers verdict on Jose Mourinho and his Tottenham attack ahead of Newcastle game

Steve Bruce has questioned why Jose Mourinho comes in for criticism from fans ahead of Newcastle United's game against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Taking on the job at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from Mauricio Pochettino last November following the Argentine's dismissal, the 57-year-old unfortunately couldn't lead Spurs to a Champions League place following a number of injuries to key players.

The Lilywhites have started the season with three wins from four games and he will be hoping that the team can carry on their current form as he looks to see them challenge towards the top of the table once again.

Mourinho has already added five players to his squad ahead of the transfer deadline and he's not done just yet in the transfer market as he looks to bring in a new striker and centre-back.

Asked about the Tottenham squad at his pre-match press conference, Bruce opened up on Spurs' wealth of options in attack and also defended Mourinho given some of the criticism he has come in for in recent years.

"Spurs have a world-class centre-forward in Kane, Son isn't bad next to him either & then you add Gareth Bale to that. That's what the Premier League is about," he said.

"Mourinho will go down in folklore - how he gets criticised is ridiculous because he is one of the great coaches."

Newcastle will be looking to pick up maximum points in N17 once again on Sunday as they left with a 1-0 win in August 2019 courtesy of Joelinton's goal.

Given Spurs' options in the final third, as well as their current form, the ex-Manchester United players knows his side will have to do something different tactically if they are to come away with the points.

"We can’t think we can go and play against the top teams and match them just in a game of football – we have to do something different, tactically," he added, as reported by Newcastle Chronicle.

"We did it well against the top teams last year. Let's hope we can do the same again this year."
