Steve Bruce delivers Newcastle injury update and insists it'll be 'strong' team at Rochdale

Steve Bruce has insisted that Newcastle United will be "as strong as they possibly can be" for the FA Cup clash at Rochdale.

The third round clash at Spotland coincides with a horrendous absentee list following five injuries in one game against Leicester City at St James' Park.

Bruce has been boosted by news that US international DeAndre Yedlin and the right-back could even feature against the EFL side.

But the game comes too early for Paul Dummett, Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles, although Matt Ritchie could be fit enough for a place on the bench.

Newcastle will also be without Fabian Schar, Jetro Willems, Javier Manquillo and Jonjo Shelvey.

Bruce was at the training ground before sunrise to get medical checks on some of his injured players.

Bruce said: "Yedlin is going to be OK. Dummett, Clark and Lascelles, maybe for Wolves.

"Ritchie is training and may take a place on the bench."

Speaking on Ritchie's return, Bruce said: "He trained yesterday and he's been a big miss.

"He's lively and it's good to see him back. It's like having a new player.

"He's due a run of games and it's good to see him back."

Bruce vowed to take the cups seriously when he was appointed.

Bruce said: "We are still going to be strong, do our best and try to progress into the next round."
