Steve Bruce delivers grim warning on spending ahead of summer 2021 transfer window

Steve Bruce has revealed he does not expect Newcastle United to splash out in the next transfer window with the club expecting to lose all of their match day revenue in the current season.

The Magpies make around £25million per season on ticket sales and the pandemic is likely to claim the match day experience of the 50,000 regulars for the whole of the 2020/21 campaign.

Bruce made it clear before the January window even opened that no money would be spent on a permanent deals in the winter window with only Arsenal youngster Joe Willock coming through the door on deadline day on a loan deal.

Now Bruce, speaking at his Press conference this week, says that he does not expect Newcastle to go overboard with their spending in the future under the current ownership model.

It means that signings such as Callum Wilson from AFC Bournemouth and Jamal Lewis from Norwich City, could be the last big deals at St James' Park for some time.

Bruce said: "I think what you are going to see, especially during the pandemic, is that we haven't seen many big transfers and I can't see things changing in the summer.

"So I think it will be the same again I would have thought.

"There will be a few and a privileged few that will have money, but certainly the way it's looking I don't think there will be supporters back in the ground this season.

"Every club is haemorrhaging money at the moment.

"It was earmarked for transfers so it will be more of the same."

Of course, the prospect of a takeover - with Amanda Staveley and the Middle East consortium waiting to hear on Mike Ashley's court battle outcome - would change that, but Bruce and his scouting team are already assessing possible loan deals for next term.

Willock's arrival has already resulted in suggestions that should the deal be a success the midfielder could extend his temporary stay on Tyneside in a similar loan arrangement next term.

But Newcastle will also have to bring in others on temporary deals to make up the balance of their squad.

Bruce added: "Yeah the loan market is always very difficult.

"But it (the loan arrival of Joe Willock) shows the value of it."
