Steve Bruce delivers fitness update on Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin

Steve Bruce has offered an explanation after Miguel Almiron was taken off at Anfield.

The Paraguay international made his way off the field after a tough 85-minute shift before being replaced by Dwight Gayle.

In truth, it wasn't Almiron's greatest performance for Newcastle and he never quite recovered from a first-half moment in which he got in the way of a pass intended for Joelinton which would have put the Brazilian striker clean through.

After the game, Bruce was asked why Almiron came off and said: "We hope it’s cramp with Almiron."

Bruce is constantly keeping a check on Allan Saint-Maximin with the French star the victim of some brutal fouls from Liverpool yesterday as he tormented their defence.

Bruce also feels that the ex-Nice man will be fine to face Arsenal next weekend.

He said: "Saint-Maximin’s going to take knocks because of the way he plays.

"I think he’s OK."

United will assess the fitness levels of Switzerland international Fabian Schar this week to see if he is fit enough to face the Gunners.

Schar has missed 77 days since injuring his knee in the 3-2 win over Southampton.
