Steve Bruce delivers cautious update as Allan Saint-Maximin finally returns to training

Steve Bruce has warned that Allan Saint-Maximin's return from Covid means his recovery must be monitored carefully.

The Magpies go into their clash with Arsenal with Northern Ireland left-back Jamal Lewis back from a knock while Jamaal Lascelles is available again following a rest in the last Premier League game at Sheffield United which ended in 1-0 defeat.

Bruce goes in against the Gunners under pressure from fans but the backing of his employers.

When asked about the fitness of his squad, he said: "Jamal Lewis could come back in. Jamaal Lascelles too.

"We've got a problem with Federico Fernández.

"Allan Saint-Maximin is training today or tomorrow which is good news but he's been out for around seven weeks so we'll have to monitor him."

Bruce wants a response from his side after losing 1-0 to the Blades.

He said: "You always want a response from your team and I expect one.

"Yes, in the Premier League you're going to get beaten but certainly the other night, the way we went about it, wasn't good enough."
