Steve Bruce delighted with Newcastle's 'under-the-radar' summer signing

Steve Bruce has spoken of his delight after Mark Gillespie's start to his Newcastle United career.

The Newcastle United boss threw Gillespie in as No 2 following Martin Dubravka's summer injury.

Gillespie has stepped in as Bruce's League Cup keeper so far and responded with two shutouts against both Blackburn Rovers and Morecambe.

Whether Bruce plays him against the Shrimpers remains to be seen, but after Karl Darlow's man-of-the-match display at Spurs he is expected to be preserved for the Burnley game on Saturday night.

But Bruce, speaking at his Press conference, said: "Very quietly he's got on with it. He's kept two clean sheets.

"It was a big night against Blackburn. He's been away to learn his trade after being released as a boy.

"I am delighted for him. Of the five summer signings he has slipped under the radar."
