Steve Bruce dealt fresh injury blow in training but Magpies have options for FA Cup

Newcastle United have been dealt a fresh injury blow as Northern Ireland international Jamal Lewis sat out of the 2-1 loss to Leicester City.

Lewis was replaced by Matt Ritchie on the left-hand side but Steve Bruce hopes he will be able to return sooner rather than later.

United have just recovered from a spate of Covid issues with Jamaal Lascelles and Allan Saint-Maximin still missing due to the virus.

When asked about Lewis' absence, Bruce said: "Unfortunately he picked up a knee injury yesterday in training.

"We don't think it's anything too bad, but obviously it swelled up overnight so he wasn't available."

Bruce also admitted that midfielder Jonjo Shelvey still wasn't 100% fit with the former England international noticeably off the pace for Leicester's second goal.

Bruce said: "We've had problems – Jonjo hasn't been right, for me, since his groin operation and Isaac was suspended today, so I thought I'd go with the two Longstaffs and I thought they did okay."

Bruce at least has Paul Dummett, Emil Krafth and Javier Manquillo back available to him again for Arsenal next week after the trio missed out recently due to Covid and general illness in the case of the ex-Wales defender.
