Steve Bruce confirms injury blow for Newcastle ahead of Palace clash as striker emerges as doubt

Newcastle United could be without striker Joelinton for the Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.

The Magpies travel to face the Eagles at Selhurst Park, with Steve Bruce's men looking to bounce back from a 4-0 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last weekend.

But Bruce has a number of injury problems ahead of the game, with Joelinton emerging as a doubt ahead of the trip to south London.

However, former Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle could return from a hamstring injury to face his old club.

"Dwight Gayle has trained all week and puts himself in contention," confirmed Bruce, as reported by Chronicle Live.

"So does Yoshi Muto. Christian Atsu is sick and we’ve got a slight doubt about Joelinton who has a bit of a sore thigh but we expect him to be OK.”

Bruce will be without defender Ciaran Clark though, who has been ruled out with an ankle problem after going off late in the 4-0 defeat against Arsenal.

"It's a nasty one for sure," said Bruce.

"We're not too sure how long. He goes to see a specialist this week, but is in a boot at the moment and really badly twisted his ankle."

As a result, Bruce will be forced into a defensive reshuffle, with Florian Lejeune and Fabian Schar in contention to start.

Newcastle will also be without Andy Carroll for the game, while Emil Krafth and Jonjo Shelvey are also set to miss out through injury, but could return to training next week.
