Steve Bruce confirms he will look at a new deal for Sean Longstaff in the next couple of months

Steve Bruce has confirmed Newcastle plan to sit down with Sean Longstaff over renewing his current deal at the club.

Bruce's revelation arrived after Allan Saint-Maximin became the latest in a long line of senior Newcastle players to commit their futures to the club over the past year.

Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow, Javi Manquillo, Isaac Hayden, Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey have all committed to long-term deals in recent months.

It signals backing for Bruce from the club's hierarchy, after they also switched tact in the transfer market to land the manager's preferred targets.

And the United boss says there are two or three more players he is keen to sit down and discuss a contract renewal with in the 'next couple of months' and Longstaff, whose current deal expires at the end of next season, heads that list.

"Quietly over the last 12 months, we have got a core of players to commit to the club," Bruce told NUFC TV.

"I think that speaks volumes for them that they want to be here and what they have done for the club over the last two or three years.

"They have got their just rewards and it takes away that horrible: 'Am I going to get a contract or not?' because the vast majority of them have tied themselves down to new contracts.

"Of course, there's two or three we will look at in the next couple of months.

"Sean Longstaff's obviously up there with that as well so we will do our utmost to keep this squad the way it is."
