Steve Bruce breaks Newcastle United's silence on Neil Redfearn's departure and insists he will be replaced

Steve Bruce wants "an input" into who takes the Newcastle United Under-23 manager's job following Neil Redfearn's departure this week.

The Toon boss watched the second string's Premier League Cup game against West Bromwich Albion today as Ben Dawson took charge of the reserves alongside coach Liam Bramley .

Dawson is expected to remain in the director of youth coaching he took on in the summer.

Bruce told Chronicle Live:  "I would like to think I would have some sort of input.

"Academies are there for the future of all clubs. So there will have to be a certain structure in there.

"All managers expect that but if I can have an input, which I hope I will have, we can come up with somebody who can fill the role and do it well."

Former Toon players such as Peter Ramage and Aaron Hughes are thought to be interested in the vacant role.

Bruce reflected on Redfearn's departure and said:  "We're disappointed, I like Neil.

"I am disappointed that he has left. The Academy must now move on.

"There was a game today already. I wish Neil the best of luck but we will have to find a replacement as quick as we can."
