Steve Bruce backs Joelinton to be a 'big hit' at Newcastle United despite mixed day at Preston

Steve Bruce has played down the fact that Joelinton opted against taking a penalty just seconds into his Newcastle United debut.

The Brazilian wriggled his way into the box before Michael Sailsbury pointed to the spot, only for Miguel Almiron to fluff his spot-kick.

However, Bruce was not disappointed about the fact the number 9 did not take the opportunity to open his account.

His woe was compounded when he was adjudged to have fouled in the box resulting in the match winning penalty at the other end for veteran striker Paul Gallagher.

However, after the game Bruce said: "I think he’ll be a big hit.

"He is full of life and full of energy and plays with his heart on his sleeve.

"He is not a typical Brazillian - all the silky skills that you associate - however, I think he will be an effective number 9."

Bruce was pleased by the combination play that Almiron and Joelinton displayed at Deepdale.

He went on: "The two of them (Joeliton and Almiron) will be a handful.

"After one minute, they combined, which could have won us the game.

"It was nice to see Miggy, it was the first time I have seen him live.

"He is a very good player."
