Steve Bruce backed to get the best out of Callum Wilson at Newcastle by his former forward

Callum Wilson will thrive at St James' Park if Steve Bruce 'sells him the dream' about playing up front for Newcastle United.

That is the verdict of Bruce's former forward at Sunderland, Darren Bent, who believes a move to Newcastle would be 'superb' for the England international forward.

Bent was also a Three Lions international when he made the move to the North East to work with Bruce and he enjoyed a prolific 18-month spell at the Stadium of Light.

The 36-year-old banged in 36 goals in 63 games and he credits Bruce's man-management with playing a big part in his success on Wearside.

Wilson, who fought back from two serious knee injuries to register 14 goals and 10 assists in the 2018/19 season to win his place in the Three Lions squad, preferred a move to Newcastle over Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

And now a £20million bid has been accepted by the Cherries, Bent is excited to see how the former Coventry forward fares in the North East.

“If Steve Bruce speaks to him and says ‘listen, you’re one of our top priorities, you’re going to play’ and sells him the dream, like he did for me when he was at Sunderland, then he can get the best out of him," Bent told Football Insider.

“For me, I’d like to see Callum Wilson up there.

“I know Villa will be in for him amongst other teams but Newcastle would be superb for him.”
