Steve Bruce asked about relationship with Mike Ashley, and reflects on crowd chants one week on

Steve Bruce insists that Mike Ashley has not been in touch to talk about Newcastle United's win-less start to the season.

However, he stated he continues to have a running dialogue with managing director Lee Charnley, despite a stormy end to the transfer window.

A lack of new faces on deadline day was swiftly followed by a lengthy statement on the club's possibilities in terms of recruitment.

Chronicle Live reported this week that Ashley had spoken to club insiders about Bruce's future but the message was that the former Manchester United skipper will get the chance to turn results around like last season.

When asked today if Ashley had been in touch, Bruce, speaking at his Press conference, said: "I never have dialogue with the owner.

"My dialogue and my remit is to deal with Lee and that's what I do in the running of the club, of the day to day business, and that's the way it is.

"There's nothing new in that."

The reality is win, lose or draw at Watford, Bruce will remain in the hotseat at St James' Park.

Ashley will not make drastic changes unless Newcastle became cut adrift at the bottom of the table giving Bruce the chance to get back on track.

Bruce also offered some reflections on the negativity directed towards him against Leeds in the 1-1 draw.

He said: "I've had flak since I walked through the door.

"Unfortunately, it's something we all (managers) have to deal with.

"You're judged on results and we haven't got enough at the moment.

"We're supposed to be 'boring Newcastle' but we weren't vs Leeds."
