Steve Bruce anticipating 'two or three' Newcastle United departures in the January transfer window

Steve Bruce believes Jack Colback will be 'a very good player' for another club but has seemingly closed the door on the midfielder returning to the first team squad.

Speaking ahead of this weekend's clash with Crystal Palace, Bruce praised Colback's attitude as the 30-year-old continues to train with the first team despite not being in the 23-man squad, but admitted he needs to 'move on.'

Colback has been linked with Nottingham Forest - the side where he spent a season and a half on loan, but it remains to be seen whether any club in the Championship could afford his wages.

“It’s that awful situation where you have to pick a squad," Bruce said ahead of United's game against Crystal Palace.

"The day before, Jack was going to be in the squad.

"And, for somebody out there, he’ll be a very good player. I’m convinced of that.

"The same goes for Henri Saivet, as well.

"They don’t find themselves in the squad, so to train every day when there’s no game at the end of it is hard.

"I do believe in keeping them around the place.

"Jack being Jack, being a good pro, has trained every day hoping that he can reboot his career. He needs to move on.”

The transfer window opens at the end of the month, and while Newcastle are likely to be cautious when it comes to incomings - as hinted by Lee Charnley - Bruce conceded that there could be a few departures.

"Ki is another one - I’m sure there’ll be two or three," he added.

"If you’re not paying regularly when you get to a certain age, you’re entitled to knock down the door.

"I know what I was like. I wouldn’t accept that I couldn’t play on a Saturday.”
