Steve Bruce announces Joelinton plan and it should encourage Newcastle fans

Steve Bruce has hinted that Joelinton will get his fair share of chances in a front two partnership with Callum Wilson this season.

The Brazilian scored his first goal in 17 matches in the Premier League and put in a man of the match display at Selhurst Park to help secure three important points for the Magpies.

Newcastle's postponement for Friday night's game at Aston Villa due to the club's Covid-19 crisis has dented any hopes of momentum for the duo, but Bruce is delighted with what he watched at Selhurst Park.

Bruce said: "I think any striker likes somebody alongside him.

"We don't see it very often these days. The way the game is played these days it's all changed. He is certainly a handful.

"The link-up play and a little bit of quality between him and Callum Wilson have got them both a goal and assist each."

Joelinton's £40million transfer fee has been resting heavily on his shoulders since summer 2019 but his performances out wide earlier this season were solid and his display at Palace at least offers some hope moving forward for the club.

Bruce added: "There was a performance from him.

"Physically there was a performance from him and he is now getting used to playing in the Premier League.

"Look he has to improve with his finishing.

"He had the best opportunities for us on the night (at Palace)."

Bruce also feels that Joelinton's strength of character has shone through in recent weeks after a tough start in a Toon shirt.

The former Manchester United captain said: "He's stuck at it.

"The kid wants to do well. He has had a tough time, there is no disputing that, but he wants to improve.

"And he did to help us win the match."
