Steve Bruce admits things need to change after unacceptable Crystal Palace defeat

Steve Bruce has admitted that he may have to change tactics to get Newcastle United’s season back on track.

The Magpies were beaten 1-0 by a poor Crystal Palace side as the fans made their feelings known at Selhurst Park.

Bruce has toyed before with moving away from the five-man defensive rearguard that has kept United in the division in the last couple of years.

But he said today: “Maybe it’s time for change.

“Maybe it’s time to try something different, to have a look, but I couldn’t fault their effort and endeavour.

“They never stopped in that respect.”

When asked about the criticism of the team and the tactics after fans chanted: “Attack, attack, attack”, Bruce said: “That’s what the manager of Newcastle Untied is.

“You have to accept it when you get beat and don’t deserve to win the game.

“When you don’t deserve to win the game, you have to accept the consequences.”

United boss Bruce was then asked where he thought it went wrong at Palace.

He replied: “Our big Achilles heel is blatantly obvious today.

“We gave the ball away in good areas so cheaply, especially in the final third.

“We get so far and unfortunately it breaks down too often, too cheaply.”
