Steve Bruce admits Newcastle not good enough in final third

Steve Bruce says he was unhappy with Newcastle United’s display in the final third against Leicester City.

The Magpies were beaten 2-1 by the Foxes at St James’ Park but Bruce did not feel then hold-up play was satisfactory.

Bruce hauled off Joelinton before the end and also replaced playmaker Miguel Almiron.

After the game, Bruce said: “Attacking wise, we have to hold on to the ball better

“Unfortunately, in the final third in particular, we gave it away.

“We gave it away for the (first) goal, we gave it away too cheaply, too often.”

Several deliveries into the box went begging with both Jacob Murphy and DeAndre Yedlin visibly annoyed when crosses flew past the back post without being attacked.

Bruce added: “There’s something we have to improve on. We have to be better in the final third, but that is always the hard part.

“That’s where you look for that little bit of quality, and unfortunately today we didn’t see enough of it.”
