Steve Backshall reveals he almost died after terrifying cave diving stunt went wrong

TV presenter Steve Backshall has revealed that he almost died after his cave diving stunt went wrong while filming his latest series.

Appearing on Lorraine today, he spoke about how shooting BBC series Undiscovered Worlds certainly wasn't smooth sailing.

Describing what happened, he said that it had been "pretty full-on".

A clip from the show teased the terrifying moment Steve was stuck between a narrow space in the underwater caves.

"The thing with cave diving is that you have to be calm, you have to be relaxed," he said. "You have to be in control."

Steve, 46, is married to Olympic rower Helen Glover and the pair have a son, Logan, together.

Unfortunately, filming the series didn't come at the best time as his son had just been born.

Filming the BBC series also meant Steve missed his son soon after his birth (ITV)

"It was really really bad timing that this huge expedition project, which I've been trying to get off the ground since the late 90s," he said.

Steve would often have to go off on six week-long trips with no contact.

"Every time I came back he would be a different person," he told Lorraine.
