Stereophonics and Tom Jones in Cardiff: Stage times, banned items, road closures, support and more

Welsh music greats Stereophonics and Tom Jones will be taking over the Principality Stadium, performing to thousands of fans. Many fans will be looking forward to this epic concert as it was cancelled in December 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Now the two Welsh acts will be performing in the stadium on Friday, June, 17, and Saturday, June, 18. Cardiff is set to be very busy with fans travelling in to see the shows and for an event this big concert goers could have a lot of questions, from what you can take into the stadium, to road closures for the event to the set times and setlist.

When is Stereophonics and Tom Jones playing in Cardiff?

Stereophonics and Tom Jones will be playing in Cardiff on Friday, June, 17, and Saturday, June, 18. They will be playing at the Principality Stadium.

What time are they on stage?

Gates to the Principality Stadium open at 3pm and there will now be two support acts as Catfish and the Bottlemen have pulled out of the gig.

Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard - 3.40pm

Feeder (Friday) - 4.45pm

Gruff Rhys (Saturday) - 4.45pm

Tom Jones - 6.15pm

Stereophonics - 8pm

Who are the support acts?

Stereophonics and Tom Jones will have three different support acts across the two shows. Since Catfish and the Bottlemen have pulled out of the gig due to "unforeseen practical issues" Feeder and Gruff Rhys will fill their spot.

Feeder are a rock band formed in Newport and they have 11 studio albums, four EPs, and a whopping 43 singles. They will be performing on Friday, June, 17.

Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys is a Welsh music icon and has an extensive back catalogue to choose from during his support set. He will be performing on Saturday, June, 18.

Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard will be performing both nights and they are a band from Cardiff.

Can I still get tickets?

You can still buy tickets for both shows on Ticketmaster. Tickets brought for the original concerts in December 2021 are still valid.

Will there be road closures?

A full city centre road closure will be in place during both gigs to ensure people can safely enter and leave the stadium after the concerts. On Friday, June, 17 road closures will be in place from 2.30pm to 12.30am.

The road closures will begin earlier on Saturday, June, 18 from 12pm to 12.30am. On both days from 7am, access to Scott Road and Park Street will be managed to ensure vehicles do not park in the road closure area.

These are the roads which will be closed:

Kingsway from its junction with North Road to its junction with Duke Street

Cowbridge Road East from its junction with Cathedral Road to its junction with Westgate Street

Tudor Street from its junction with Clare Road to its junction with Wood Street (access for residents and traders will be permitted via Fitzhammon Embankment.

Plantagenet Street and Beauchamp Street from their junctions with Despenser Place to their junctions with Tudor Street (access for residents and traders will be permitted.

The following roads will be closed in their entirety: Duke Street, Castle St, High Street, St Mary Street, Caroline Street, Wood Street, Central Square, Westgate Street, Quay Street, Guildhall Place, Golate, Park Street, Havelock Street, and Scott Road

Station Terrace and Guildford Street from the junction with Newport Road to the junction with Churchill Way will be accessible for buses only during the times of the road closures. This is to ensure that there is reliable access for buses to the satellite points in Churchill Way.

Access to part of the Civic Centre will be controlled throughout the day, with access allowed only for event parking, limited commuter parking, loading, and access to private car parks. Roads affected include King Edward VII Avenue, Museum Avenue, City Hall Road, College Road, and Gorsedd Gardens Road.

Penarth Road (back of Cardiff Central Train Station) from the junction of St Mary Street through to the entrance off Penarth Road will close between 9pm and midnight to help Transport for Wales with the queuing fans.

Where can I park?

There will be event day parking at Cardiff Civic Centre. Parking will cost £15 for the day and the car park will be open from 8am to 12am on both Friday, June, 17 and Saturday, June, 18.

There is also an event park and ride facility running from County Hall in Cardiff Bay. Buses will be running to and from the city centre every 10 minutes before the concerts begin and the cost of this service is £10.

The car park will open at 10.30am with the first bus leaving at 11am and the last bus from the city centre will run at 12am and the car park will close at 12.15am the next day.

Parking is also available at Canton rugby club on both days. The full address of the car park is Canton rugby club, Lawrenny Avenue, CF11 8BR and you can book the parking on the Principality Parking (not connected with the Principality Stadium) website, here.

And there's event day parking at Sophia Gardens (CF11 9FH) which costs £15 and you can pay with card or cash. This car park is open from 8am-12 midnight.

What items are banned from the Principality Stadium?

Large bags are not permitted into the stadium, only small bags and handbags are allowed. There will be random searches and any banned items will have to be surrendered to allow you into the stadium.

Will the Principality Stadium roof be closed?

Organisers have announced that the Principality Stadium roof will be closed meaning fans will stay dry during the concert whatever the weather.
