Stepmother slammed for 'ruining' daughter's prom with 'selfish' holiday request

A stepmother has been slammed for her decision in making her husband miss their child's prom to go away on holiday.

In a post on social forum Reddit, the stepmum explained that she had logic behind wanting to go away on holiday the same weekend as her stepdaughter's prom, reports the Mirror.

However, readers were quick to criticise the parent for her behaviour, even when she had explained her current dilemma.

As the stepmum outlined, her husband has two daughters - one of them is biologically both theirs, but he also has an older daughter from a previous relationship.

The said 18-year-old is looking forward to her prom at high school, but is devastated that her dad and nine-year-old sister won't be able to attend.

It an unfortunate chain of events, her stepmum booked a holiday with friends before the prom date was released, and the weekend also coincides with a cheerleading competition her youngster sister is attending.

As kids under 16 need to be accompanied by a guardian for the competition, and there were no exceptions, the dad was forced to make a difficult decision.

His wife explained: "My husband is now going to be missing Riley's prom to take Lauren to her competition.

"Riley thinks this is extremely unfair and that we're playing favorites since she'll never get this chance again and she wants pictures with her dad and sister. She's been messaging my husband about it.

"Lauren doesn't want to miss her competition and risk her spot on her team.

"My husband asked if I'd cancel my trip and I told him no. The trip has been booked, paid for, and I also need a break. He takes breaks and trips as well.

"My husband and I are now fighting because he feels like no matter what he does he's stuck. He's already told Lauren he'll be taking her to the cheer comp which means he'll be missing prom."

Unfortunately for the older daughter, the parent did not appear to be swayed by social media users who took her side.

One commenter claimed: "We all know who the favorite is."

Another user argued: "Prom happens once. Your 9 year old has plenty of cheerleading competitions. The focus should be the once in a lifetime deal.

"No wonder your stepdaughter is totally p***d. Do better."

In an update to the original post, the stepmum wrote: "I have decided to stand my ground that I will not be cancelling my trip. I will be getting on the plane in the morning.

"Josh just sat down me, Riley, and Lauren to talk about the weekend. He explained he'll be taking Lauren to her competition while Riley’s mother takes pictures with her at prom.

"He said he taught the girls about commitment and he's not going to have Lauren's absence have the team forfeit.

"He told her we could do pictures if she wanted to put her dress on a second time but she said it won't be the same and she's upset.

"Riley is upset with her father and thinks he's favoring Lauren."
