Stephon Gilmore releases a statement on contracting COVID-19

New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore addressed testing positive for COVID-19 with a statement on Twitter on Wednesday.

“Thank you to everyone who has reached out since hearing about my positive COVID-19 test,” Gilmore wrote. “Your messages aren’t unseen and are greatly appreciated. I’m currently asymptomatic and will take this as it comes. I don’t know what to expect, but my spirit is high because of God. I’ve followed every protocol, yet it happened to me. Please be sure to take this seriously.

“The Gilly Lock is going to sit down until the medical professionals let me know it’s best to continue normal activity. Your well wishes and prayers mean the world to me.”

Gilmore will remain on the Reserve-COVID-19 list until he tests negative on consecutive days for the novel coronavirus. If he remains asymptomatic, he can return with those two negative tests. If he gets symptoms, he must remain away from the team for at least 10 days after the first symptoms were first reported, with a number of other boxes to check. Here’s a look at the guidelines.

Gilmore’s positive test comes after Cam Newton tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday. Gilmore is the third Patriots player to go on the Reserve-COVID-list in the last week.
