Stephen Welsh handed Celtic injury reprieve as defender breathes sigh of relief after horror St Mirren moment

Celtic defender Stephen Welsh appears to have got a lucky break and avoided any serious injury from his horror injury at St Mirren.

The Scotland under-21 cap was stretchered off after Saints striker Jon Obika accidentally caught him on the ankle in the second half of Wednesday’s clash.

Television footage showed the 21-year-old go over badly on his ankle.

Welsh hobbled out of St Mirren Park wearing a protective boot after Celtic ’s 4-0 win.

The 21-year-old was sent for a check-up with the club and player relieved to discover there were no breaks or ligament damage.

The Hoops believe Welsh has got away with nothing but some severe bruising.

Welsh will be assessed by the Celtic medical team ahead of Sunday’s clash with St Johnstone.

Speaking after the win in Paisley manager Neil Lennon said: "He got a real heavy knock, a trauma.

"His foot is in a pot at the minute so it is difficult to assess the damage until the physios get a real good look at it. We are hoping it is just a bang on the ankle.

"But we will have to see if there is any damage there. He seemed okay.

"With the foot in the pot it kind of keeps it stable and he didn’t look to be in any distress.

“He has done very well. We have been very pleased with him and he is a good kid.

"Hopefully he won’t miss any games. If he does he will be back in the squad as soon as possible because he has earned it.”

On-loan centre-back Shane Duffy replaced Welsh when he was carried off in Paisley.

The Brighton defender had lost his place after struggling since joining Celtic but would be the most likely candidate to step in if Welsh can't make it.
