Stephen Welsh admits Celtic 'Easy Street' feeling after Rangers end decade of dominance

Stephen Welsh has known nothing but success as a Celtic fan until this season.

The academy graduate has supported the Hoops all his life and has been on the books at Celtic Park since he was eight.

So to see Rangers end a decade of dominance and stop ten-in-a-row in the season he made his first team breakthrough hurt.

It’s the first time since 2012 that Celtic haven’t lifted the Scottish Premiership trophy and Welsh admits it’s become almost expected.

But he’s well aware they are no longer on Easy Street and has vowed to do everything he can to wrestle the title back from Rangers.

He said: “I’ve been at the club since I was seven or eight so it’s a massive achievement to be playing in the first team after 13 years.

“My family are all massive Celtic fans, they’ve had season tickets as long as I can remember.

“It’s been complete dominance while I was growing up. When I was going through high school we were winning leagues every single year.

“It was almost like Easy Street, it was just expected.

“But there was always going to be disappointments and we have to deal with it in the right way and bounce back as quickly as we can.”

The League may be gone, but there’s still the small matter of ending their rivals unbeaten league season, which they get a crack at next Sunday.

And a fifth successive Scottish Cup would help ease some of the pain of this campaign.

He told the Celtic View podcast: “It’s more about playing for pride in the league and we need to win every one of our remaining games and put a statement down.

“The cup is a trophy we need to go and win.

“We’ve had a great run with four in a row and hopefully we can do it again.

“It will be massive to end a difficult season on a high.”

Despite forcing his way into the first team this season, Welsh has to see this year as one of disappointment given what was at stake and what Celtic failed to achieve.

He added: “I’ve been getting games consistently since the turn of the year so that’s been pleasing for me personally.

“But it has been a disappointing season. We all know that and all take responsibility.

“The results have not been good enough, especially with the high standards we set as a club.

“It’s been good to make the breakthrough as so few manage to do it.

“It’a a massive achievement to make your debut but you can’t just play one game to be a Celtic player.

“I’ve played a few games this season and want to kick on.

“It’s a great privilege as most Celtic fans would give everything to play for this club.

“The bottom line is you need to be professional and take the emotion out of being a fan.

“You need to go out and do your job but it makes it more special you are doing it for your club.”
