Stephen Robinson blasts wasteful Motherwell attack as he questions under-fire stars' mentality

Stephen Robinson refused to paper over the cracks after his Motherwell men suffered more misery.

The Fir Park side dominated against Hamilton Accies but were hit by a late blow to continue their winless start to the season.

Robinson said: “On paper we look like a real threat up front. But paper doesn’t win you football matches.

“It was frustrating the whole game. “We must gave had 70 percent possession – that’s Rangers and Celtic stuff – and I don’t know how many balls across the six yard box.

“All the stats in the world don’t mean anything when you don’t get the result.

“The difference between the teams was the desire to go an score a goal.

“We didn’t show enough desire to finish the game off or defend in our own box.

“We can’t keep saying it’s bad luck, you make your own luck by being brave and we were not brave enough to finish the game off.”

Robinson admitted his side need to be mentally tough to get out of the rut ahead of Glentoran’s visit in the Europa League this week.

He said: “It looks like confidence. Look, the subs were poor, and that’s my fault. I made three changes that were positive and we wanted to shake it up as we weren’t getting enough from the boys that were on.

“But we didn’t do that in any shape or form, apart from Tony Watt, who at least ran about. So I have to take the blame for that. I have ultimate responsibility.

“They are boys who go in to their shell when they get criticised. We don’t have a magic wand – or a magic cheque book to change the personnel.

“We have a decent squad but people are under performing. You are not going to win football matches if your strikers are not in form, whether you are Rangers, Celtic, Aberdeen or Motherwell, someone will get that finishing tough.

“This was a game we completely dominated yet they had a side who were willing to put bodies on the line. When it came for us to do the same, we didn’t do it.

“I won’t criticise individuals, it’s collective responsibility.

“Is it a concern for Thursday – that’s stating the obvious.”
