Stephen O'Donnell's Motherwell future unclear as star targets Scotland Euro slot

Stephen O'Donnell insists everyone at Motherwell is relaxed about his contract situation as uncertainty reins over his future at Fir Park.

The defender signed in August on a short term deal and with his contract up at the end of January, O'Donnell could look to move on in a bid to tie down a place in Steve Clarke's squad for the rescheduled Euro 2020 next summer, which will see Scotland play group games against Croatia and Czech Republic on home soil at Hampden and England at Wembley.

He has made 23 appearances for the Steelmen this season, helping him start regularly for his country alongside team-mate and club skipper Declan Gallagher.

But asked if he wanted to stay at Motherwell, Wishaw ace O'Donnell was non-committal.

He said: "I certainly have enjoyed my time. I feel I've settled in really well with the players and the staff.

"Obviously, I stay locally so it's nearly perfect in that sense, but it needs to fit everyone's agenda.

"I'm hoping to get to the Euros in the summer and you can't make decisions based on that because you don't know what's around the corner.

"But I just want to keep working hard and hopefully there will be conversations with my agent, the club and other clubs, if interested, then I'll see what I think is best for myself moving forward.

"It's a time you can maybe be a bit more selfish, but in the short term I'm only interested in one thing - and that's working my backside off for Motherwell.

"I hope that since I've come back from Scotland [duty last month] that the fans, the players and the management staff can see that.

"And that will continue until I'm not here, whether that's in January, the summer or in five years time.

"That's all I've ever done for every club I've been at and I'll continue to do that."

He added: "I'm pretty relaxed about it, the manager is relaxed about it and the board has been as well.

"The focus needs to be on making sure we are picking up the right points and maybe when things are a bit more settled down we can sit and have a conversation and what will be will be the best for everyone involved."

O'Donnell played a key role in helping Scotland qualify for their first major tournament in 23 years, defeating Serbia on penalties in the play-off final last month.

Since he and Gallagher returned from national duty, they have yet to pick up a win with the Steelmen following a league draw and a Betfred Cup defeat to St Johnstone, plus losses to Hibs, St Mirren and, most recently, Rangers on Saturday.

"It's disappointing that we've not been able to use that to bring better performances personally and collectively," the former Kilmarnock player admitted.

"We need to make sure we keep working hard and do our best for Motherwell."
