Stephen O'Brien freed to play for Kerry in All-Ireland football final

Kerry's Stephen O’Brien has been freed to play in the All-Ireland football final against Dublin.

Having picked up his third black card of 2019 in last Sunday’s semi-final win over Tyrone, O’Brien was automatically suspended for the decider though a challenge to the caution he received against Meath earlier this month has proven to be successful.

It means the flying wing-forward, who has been in the form of his career this summer, is free to line out against Dublin on September 1.

Back in February, O’Brien was sent off in a League game against Galway having been issued with a black card (a sin bin offence at the time) followed by a yellow on that particular day, which saw him sent off.

Last Sunday he pulled down Conor McAliskey late on in the All-Ireland semi-final when Kerry were leading by four points, leaving referee Maurice Deegan with no option but to brandish a black card.

Only when a player accumulates a total of three black cards can any of them be challenged and it was the one issued by Fergal Kelly in Navan on August 3, for what appeared to be an innocuous offence, that Kerry had successfully overturned by the Central Hearings Committee at Croke Park tonight.

Kerry boss Peter Keane said: “Thankfully he's available to play in the All-Ireland final.

"You don't want to see any fellow miss out on the playing of the big day and Stephen has been very good for us this year and over the last few years he's been a key player for Kerry.

"This year in particular he's been playing very well for us."
