Stephen Mulhern's rise to fame from kid's programmes to primetime TV

Stephen Mulhern is one of TV's best loved presenters and he has been involved with many hit TV shows.

Stephen is currently starring on Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway hosting challenges as the boys compete against one another.

But the 43-year-old has had a long career in TV starting out in children's TV alongside ITV sweetheart Holly Willoughby.

Since then magician Stephen has been involved in many shows and now fronts the incredibly popular "In for a Penny" which originally started as a feature on Saturday Night Takeaway.

He's also appeared on Britain's Got Talent, Catchphrase and many other programmes.

Here's how Stephen rose from kid's TV to the Saturday night spotlight

Magician days

Stephen became interested in magic from an early age and after learning a few tricks from his dad he started performing on family holidays.

When he was 17 Stephen became a member of the Magic Circle and even appeared on Blue Peter.

After he left school at 18 Stephen create his own magic show Stephen’s Mega Mad Magic Show and worked at Butlins, Harrods and Hamleys while trying to land a job in television.

His big break came when he was 20 and he appeared on The Big Big Talent Show, hosted by Jonathan Ross.

Kid's TV

Soon after his TV break he started to present on CITV.

Stephen presented four series of Finger Tips with Fearne Cotton from 2001 to 2003 and with Naomi Wilkinson in 2004.

He also co-hosted Holly and Stephen's Saturday Showdown, originally called Ministry of Mayhem alongside Holly Willoughby f rom 2004 to 2006.

And he presented children's show Tricky TV from 2005 to 2010.

As he marked Holly's 40th birthday earlier this year Stephen shared an old photo of them and said: "Happy birthday to everyone celebrating their birthday today including my great friend @hollywilloughby.

"We had three good years on Saturday Morning TV and never looked back, have a great day and see you very soon."

Britain's Got Talent and Dancing on Ice

And Stephen didn't look back going onto score spin-off shows for major ITV programmes.

From 2006 to 2007, Stephen hosted the ITV2 show Dancing on Ice: Defrosted, while Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby hosted the main show.

And Stephen landed a lucrative presenting gig in 2007 to 2019, fronting ITV2 spin off Britain's Got More Talent after the main show on ITV.

Catchphrase and Big Star's Little Star

Stephen started to move into primetime tv in the 2010's and in 2013 he took over as the host of Catchphrase as the show was revived on ITV.

He also became the frontman for ITV's Big Star's Little Star, a show which sees celebrities and their children compete to win up to £15,000 for charity.

In for a Penny and Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway

Stephen has been friends with Ant and Dec for many years and in 2016 he became the presenter of the 'Ant vs Dec' segment on Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway after replacing Ashley Roberts.

Stephen still holds this post today and recently dressed up in a very tight gold costume that raised viewer's eyebrows.

Stephen also hosts very popular show "In for a Penny" that originally started life on Saturday Night Takeaway.

In 2020 he became host of another primetime show, Rolling it it, cementing his iconic presenter status.

How much is Stephen Mulhern worth?

After over 20 years in entertainment Stephen has amassed an impressive fortune.

In an exclusive the Mirror revealed that Stephen was one of the highest-paid TV presenters.

In a 12-month period that ended in February 2019, the presenter earned £3,051,682, which was £2.2m more than he earnt the previous year.

The increase in his pay is reported to have been caused by presenting Catchphrase, Big Star’s Little Star and In for a Penny.

With his return to Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Stephen’s earnings are set to increase further this year.
