Stephen Miller says Trump will "protect" his national emergency declaration

White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller said on "Fox News Sunday" that President Trump "will protect his national emergency declaration" for the border, refusing to answer whether Trump would veto a resolution of disapproval that Congress may pass.

Backdrop: Trump plans to tap into $3.6 billion of additional funding for the border wall via the Department of Defense's military construction fund. Trump's decision to declare a national emergency to fund a border wall has been criticized by both Republicans and Democrats as a dangerous precedent that could grant expanded executive power to future presidential administrations.

What they're saying: Members of Congress also addressed the possibility of passing a resolution of disapproval on the Sunday shows, but expressed skepticism that there would be the votes needed to override a Trump veto.

  • Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) told ABC's "This Week": "There’s going to be resolutions in both the House and Senate to disapprove what the president’s doing. I think they’ll pass, but when the president will veto them, I don’t think there’s any chance that the veto will be overridden."
  • Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) also told "This Week" that she thought the Senate would pass a resolution of disapproval, but "whether we have enough for an overriding veto, now that's a different story."
