My first cinema memory was going to see E.T. with my uncle. I don’t really remember the ins and outs of the film, I just remember being transfixed. The cinema was a big event when I was a kid and we’d go a lot when we were on holiday – I remember there was a cinema in this little fishing village in Devon that they’d set up in a church hall. It feels so archaic now.

What’s your favourite film ever?

The Apartment.

What’s your worst?

I just switch it off or walk out.

What’s your most overrated film?

It can sometimes take me a few viewings with the Tarantino films – I struggled a bit with Inglourious Basterds.

Favourite director?

Probably Billy Wilder or Robert Altman.

What’s your favourite environment for watching films?

I do like to go to the cinema but I am a bit fussy. I don’t really want people eating near me or talking. I remember going to see Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and the title came up at the beginning and the woman next to me went “That’s a weird name for a film!” She talked all the way through it, sometimes in a Chinese accent.

What’s your favourite film snack?

I don’t approve of food in the cinema. I don’t want you chomping on popcorn and nachos. Eat before you come out. You don’t go to a piano recital to find some twat frying up bacon by the stage.
