Stephen Merchant rules out Banksy as Christopher Walken mural appears in Bristol

A mural of Hollywood actor and The Outlaws star Christopher Walken has been painted in Bristol's Castle Park.

The artwork dedicated to the actor depicts Walken's character wearing his community service orange high-vis jacket and holding a paint roller.

The piece also features the words 'damb rats' - along with the name of famous Bristol artist Banksy, sparking intrigue about who was behind the new street art.

BBC series The Outlaws was written and directed by comedian and co-creator of The Office, Stephen Merchant, and is set in his hometown of Bristol.

Merchant also stars in The Outlaws, playing lawyer Greg - who follows a group of convicted criminals who are completing community service in the city.

However, the comedian has addressed the artwork on his Instagram and also shut down the Banksy speculation, writing: "Someone in Bristol is paying homage to The Outlaws - but Banksy and I had nothing to do with it."

The art appears to link to the final episode of the six-part series, where Walken's character Frank is seen completing his community service painting over graffiti.

He comes across graffiti of a rat holding a spray can, with Banksy's name sprayed above it.

In the show, the Pulp Fiction star's character asks probation officer Diane (played by Jessica Gunning) if he should paint over it, to which a distracted Diane explains that any graffiti must be painted over.

A spokesperson for the Outlaws even confirmed that the painted over piece was an original Banksy, saying: “We can confirm that the artwork at the end of The Outlaws was an original Banksy, and that Christopher Walken painted over that artwork during the filming of this scene, ultimately destroying it."

However, it was also confirmed that the piece by the anonymous artist was specifically created for the show's use.

The series was mainly filmed at Sea Mills Community Centre but also featured many other Bristol locations, including the old Bank of England Building at the edge of Castle Park.
