Stephen Merchant reveals why Christopher Walken thinks Bristol is like San Francisco

The Outlaws director Stephen Merchant revealed why Christopher Walken thinks Bristol is like San Francisco.

In a recent interview with Huw Stephens on BBC 6 Music, Merchant told fans what he told US actor Walken after being asked 'what's Bristol like?'

Bristol-born Merchant said: "I replied, 'oh it's on the water, it's very hilly and it has a big bridge - it's exactly like San Francisco!

"Because he was in lockdown over here, he couldn't go out and explore anyway. As far as he's concerned, it still does look like San Francisco!"

Merchant recalls flying to America to discuss The Outlaws with Walken.

Stephen Merchant: "Chris doesn't have a mobile phone or an email, so I ended up flying to his house in Connecticut to talk to him about the show.

"He's a very quiet man and is very contained. He thinks about his answers and isn't a big talker.

"We seemed to hit it off - I was in his house for about four hours talking about the show."

Merchant was full of praise for the role played by the legendary US actor in the new series.

He said: "He came over to Bristol and amazingly filmed these two series with us. He was extraordinary.

"A lot of these older actors you think are just there for the pay cheque, but he was as committed as I imagine he ever was.

"He really invested in the story and the script. It was a real thrill working with him."

The Outlaws, filmed in Bristol, premiered last Monday (25 October).

The comedy follows a group of fictional characters in Bristol as they complete community service in the city.

Episode three is airing on BBC One at 9pm on Monday, November 8, but is available to watch now on iPlayer.
