Stephen Merchant on The One Show: Shock and laughter as he tells Alex Jones of Bristol Harbour lorry incident

Stephen Merchant caused shock and laughter when he appeared on The One Show sofa on Friday (October 22) to promote his new Bristol-based show, The Outlaws.

The actor, writer and director was in the studio against a backdrop of Clifton Suspension Bridge and told viewers that a lorry carrying costumes from the comedy drama fell partly into Bristol Harbour on Thursday (October 21).

This caused an exclamation of shock from presenter Alex Jones, who was not aware of the incident that has probably destroyed 20 years of kit belong to costume designer Charlotte Mitchell.

Speaking to Jones and her co-host Olympic champion diver Tom Daley, Merchant said two series of The Outlaws had been filmed.

Appearing alongside his co-star Rhianne Barreto, he said: "We did two back-to-back, we've just finished filming.

"I don't know if you noticed, but one of our costume trucks fell into Bristol Harbour?"

Alex Jones reacted with a huge 'nooooo'

And Merchant joked: "Which is why Rhianne is wearing one of my suits."

Rhianne doubled over in laughter, as loud laughs were heard from the presenters and the crew as well.
