Stephen McManus given Celtic promotion as John Kennedy makes first big call of caretaker role

Stephen McManus has been promoted to first team coach at Celtic as John Kennedy gives the backroom team a shake-up.

Following the departure of Neil Lennon, his assistant has been placed in temporary charge until the end of the season.

Kennedy will take charge of his first match this weekend as Aberdeen visit Parkhead.

And the interim Celtic boss has made his first big decision as he promotes his fellow former centre-back.

The club confirmed: "Celtic Coach and former captain, Stephen McManus, will be working alongside John Kennedy and Gavin Strachan as part of the first team coaching staff."

Kennedy and McManus are friends as well as former team-mates.

They played together for the Hoops, but the former's career was cruelly cut short by a knee injury suffered playing for Scotland.

Both men signed for Celtic as players on the same day in 1998, with McManus formerly reserve team coach.

He had been working with Motherwell before returning to Parkhead in 2019 and will now assist his former team-mate for the remainder of the campaign.
