Stephen McGinn on the St Mirren turn of luck that's resulted in him making it a family hat-trick at Hibs

Stephen McGinn admits we would’ve loved the chance of win a new deal at St Mirren, but injury opened up the door to Hibs.

The 31-year-old signed a season-long deal at the Easter Road club last week, joining brother Paul in Jack Ross’ squad and completing the hat-trick of McGinn siblings to have signed for the Hibees.

Initially, McGinn was only invited to use the club’s training facilities and a deal wasn’t in the pipeline.

However, McGinn then became Ross’ eye in the sky at games, watching from the stand and feeding information to Craig Samson in the dugout.

He continued training with the squad and after a deal to land Ross McCrorie from Rangers proved unsuccessful, Ross took the chance to reunite with his former captain officially and add some experience to his midfield.

After a three-year second spell with his formative club, McGinn felt he’d repaid the faith shown in him by playing through a few injuries.

But lockdown and Jim Goodwin’s desire to freshen things up meant extending his stay in Paisley was no longer an option, although it did mean he was able to explore new opportunities, which eventually resulted in him becoming a Hibs player.

“I loved my time as captain at St Mirren and Jack Ross made me skipper during my first week in,” he told GO Radio.

“The first season back in the Premiership I played through a few injuries so I ended up getting them squared up.

“By the time I got back into training it was then into full lockdown.

“Obviously I had half an idea the manager wanted to change about the squad but I’d have liked to have had the opportunity to try and earn a new deal.

“It wasn’t to be but it’s opened up a new door that I’m really excited about.”
