Stephen Maguire: UK Athletics technical director leaves with immediate effect 10 months out for Paris Olympics

Stephen Maguire has left his role as technical director at UK Athletics with immediate effect.

Maguire was appointed to the post in the summer of 2022 marking his return to the organisation but steps down less than 10 months out from the Paris Olympics.

He had overseen a record-equalling medal haul for a British team at the World Championships in Budapest as the squad came home with 10 medals.

It brings an abrupt to his second stint with UKA when he was previously surprisingly overlooked for the role of head coach at the organisation under its former leadership in 2020 missing out to Christian Malcolm. After that decision, he left his position as head of sprints and relays.

But after Malcolm was axed from his post, Maguire was recalled in a new role as technical director. It leaves UKA without an athletics boss in the lead-up to next year’s Paris Games.

In a statement, the organisation said: “UK Athletics have announced that Stephen Maguire will leave his role as technical director with immediate effect. An interim head coach will be announced in due course, until then no further comment will be made.”
