Stephen Kenny's message for Dundalk as Lilywhites chase Europa League place

Stephen Kenny has urged Dundalk to repeat their Europa League heroics from four years ago.

The Lilywhites face KI Klaksvíkar of the Faroe Islands at Aviva Stadium tomorrow for a place in the group stages.

Ireland boss Kenny was Dundalk manager when they first made that breakthrough in 2016 and insists it is there for the taking again.

Kenny, who won four league titles and two doubles at Dundalk, said yesterday: “It’s great for the league and a good opportunity.

“There are a terrific group of players there and it’s been a tough year for them.

“The league was suspended because of Covid and then behind-closed-doors games and a short season, it’s very demoralising.

“They’re third in the league, which they haven’t been in such a long, long time, so it’s been a tough time for them."

Kenny continued: “To get an opportunity, and the way it has come about to play in the Aviva to qualify for the group stages, is brilliant.

“It has worked out that it has given them a great opportunity for a variety of reasons and I sincerely wish them well.

“I’m not well versed on their opponents but it’s a great opportunity and I’d be delighted if they can pull it off.”
