Stephen Kenny makes no excuses as Ireland suffer bruising night at Wembley

Stephen Kenny refused to make excuses for a bruising night at Wembley as he went six games without a win.

But Matt Doherty pulled no punches in a withering assessment of Ireland's struggles of late.

“I feel embarrassed sometimes when I come off the pitch because we're conceding goals and not winning games. We need to wake up,” said the Tottenham star.

Ireland started well but Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened friendly fire.

But quizzed on Doherty’s comments, Kenny said: “I’d have to speak to Matt but that doesn't concern me at all.

“I’d be alarmed if he didn’t feel that way as it’s disappointing to lose 3-0.

“We only conceded one goal in any previous 90 minutes and that's the first game that we haven't really created any chances.

“But for us to beat England, we would need our absolute best team available and play really well.

“I don’t want to sit here and make excuses but England were a step above us on the night.

“Losing can have a negative effect on you and I don’t take any pleasure out of it.

“But I learned a lot from seeing the players in that environment and that was interesting. Younger players getting caps is a valuable experience.

“You get valuable experience playing against teams of England’s quality and you can benefit in that regard.”

Kenny lost five of his starting team ahead of the game with Seamus Coleman and James McCarthy ruled out.

Coleman suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury while McCarthy was excused for family reasons.

And to compound frustrations, centre-back John Egan was forced off within 14 minutes because of a head injury.

Kenny sighed: “I’m disappointed to lose the players we did and John Egan is an important player for us. “

Roy Keane, the former Ireland captain and assistant manager, said: "It doesn't help that Ireland's best player at the moment is a full-back in Seamus Coleman.

"There are a lot of good solid pros in the squad, but none of them are pulling up any trees at club level. That bit of quality is missing. You need that to win matches.”
