Stephen Kenny leaves door open for Matt Doherty and Seamus Coleman both starting in Slovakia

Stephen Kenny has left the door open for both Matt Doherty and Seamus Coleman to start for Ireland against Slovakia next week.

Doherty, 28, started at right-back in Kenny's first two games in charge against Bulgaria and Finland in the UEFA Nations League earlier this month.

But, while Coleman was an unused substitutes on both of those occasions, his fine form in recent weeks for table toppers Everton has seen a clamour for the skipper, 31, to start ahead of Doherty in Bratislava.

Kenny said: "These are good problems to have. These are the problems we want to exist. We don't have that situation in every position.

"But we are pleased that several players are playing regularly in the first team. I think that is a lot different to a month ago when the players were in pre-season mode and hadn't played games.

"Seamus has been in flying form, there's no doubt. That's a good sign.

"We will do what we think is right for the game itself and that's the key. They are both versatile players. Matt Doherty and Seamus Doherty are huge assets to Ireland."

Mick McCarthy began his second Ireland regime last March by trying to incorporate both Coleman and Doherty on the right side in a windswept Gibraltar.

It was an experiment though that McCarthy never tried again. But asked today if he thought the two could play in the same eleven, Kenny gave an affirmative "I do".

The Ireland managed added: "Seamus has been a great captain for Ireland and great player who has started the season well.

"Matt finished the season brilliantly with Wolves, involved in scoring and creating goals every week. The last games for us he was in pre-season mode and coming back in a bit.

"But I thought his best game for Tottenham was last weekend actually - he looked really back to himself and that bodes well."
