Stephen Kenny delight as CJ Hamilton declares for Ireland

Blackpool winger CJ Hamilton has declared for Ireland - and if Stephen Kenny likes what he sees the winger could be a part of his June international camp.

Hamilton, 27, was born in Harrow in England and moved to Carrick on Suir in Waterford at a young age and qualifies for the Republic through his Irish mother.

The left winger began his career with Carrick United before moving as a youth player to Sheffield United.

He had loan spells at Halifax and Gateshead before a move to Mansfield, where he played regularly.

He moved to Blackpool in 2020 and has been a prominent player in their push to make the promotion places in the Championship in the second half of the season.

"His paperwork is done," said Kenny. "It was one that we weren't monitoring until he came to our attention, we had no idea really.

"He's playing at Championship level regularly and is very quick.

"I've not seen loads of him, I've just watched his games and so forth. He was not on my radar as such.

"He's on the radar now."

Kenny added: "Someone mentioned to us that he was available and we spoke to him. CJ is super keen and wants to do it.

"It's straightforward - he hasn't played for England or anyone else."

Stephen Kenny was speaking at a media event at the Showgrounds in Sligo to promote the LOI Show on LOITV. The LOI Show airs weekly for free on www.loitv.ie (registration only required) with a review of all of the weekend’s action from across the SSE Airtricity Premier Division, First Division and Women’s National League. The LOI Show features every goal, key highlights and analysis from a panel of experts including Gavin Peers, Alan Keane, Alanna Cunnane, Declan ‘Fabio’ O’Brien, Conan Byrne, Gary Rogers and many more.
