Stephen Kelly earns Rangers rave review as 'fantastic' youngster puts in star showing in Partick Thistle friendly

Stephen Kelly was singled out for praise by Gary McAllister after the 21-year-old came off the bench to put in an assured showing in the first pre-season friendly.

The 21-year-old was a second half substitute against Partick Thistle and put in an impressive display, hitting the post with a left-footed shot.

The midfielder spent last season on loan at Ross County but Steven Gerrard opted to include him in the stronger second half team for this game, and the Ibrox boss' assistant believes Kelly has staked his claim.

McAllister said: "Stephen Kelly did fantastically well.

"Stephen's progressed really well, he's had a couple of good loans, he's gone out and impressed every team he's gone to.

"I think he warranted that tonight, in amongst some senior players and some top international players he was very competent."

The only player to be given the full 90 minutes was goalkeeper Robby McCrorie and he's also impressed the Rangers assistant.

McAllister noted: "You look at Robby now and he really has matured.

"I've noticed that around the training ground, he's become more of a man.

"He's taking more responsibility, taking ownership of his back four, and he had a great save from the big lad (Brian) Graham to tip it over the bar.

"He had a really good night."
