Stephen Humphrys labels Hearts goal 'best of his career' after training ground 'stinker' in build-up

Stephen Humphrys has labelled his Hearts wonder goal as the 'best of his career' as he opened up on his training ground 'stinker' in build-up to facing Dundee United.

The on loan Wigan man rounded off a brilliant final 20 minutes comeback win over the Tangerines to secure a big three points and immediate bounce back from the midweek loss to Rangers in the capital. Steven Fletcher had fired the visitors ahead before they were reduced to ten men. It took until 71 minutes to find a break through with skipper and talisman Lawrence Shankland levelling against his former club.

Alex Cochrane then turned the game on its head minutes later to send Tynecastle wild before Humphrys produced a stunning piece of magic to make sure of the points. It keeps Robbie Neilson's men in a commanding position in the race for third spot behind Celtic and Rangers and sends them into their Scottish Cup last 16 clash with Hamilton on a high.

Reflecting on his strike from his OWN HALF, the Hearts star said: "Did I mean it? Of course I did! I had just sliced one out of play two minutes before — and I thought that I’d better not do that again.

"So I carried it forward a little bit. I could hear the bench shouting on me to go to the corner.

"But I thought I’ve just sprinted forward and back, now I’m sprinting forward again . . . I don’t fancy going all the way to the corner flag. I had a look at the keeper, thought I would try my luck. And it was one of them where, as soon as you hit it, you know straight away that it’s going in.

“I just had a quick glance after their lad tried to foul me. As soon as I knew that I’d shaken him off, I had a look and tried my luck.

“It is by far the best goal of my career, definitely. Mind you I had a stinker in training yesterday and missed a few. I’d been ill for a couple of days, missed training and was just lying in bed.

“Yesterday was a shock to the system, but I guess I got all my bad ones out of the way. I told the manager that.

"I am right-footed, just to clear that up. So, yeah, I hit it with my weak foot!”
