Stephen Gleeson told he can leave Aberdeen in the January transfer window

Ireland international Stephen Gleeson has been told he can leave Aberdeen in the January window.

Capped four times, the midfielder, 31, has made just one appearance all season - and that was as a last minute sub in October.

The former Birmingham and Ipswich man has been a peripheral figure since signing in the summer of 2018, making just 10 starts.

Dons boss Derek McInnes told the 'Evening Express': “Stephen is actually one that we are giving a lot of encouragement to try to move on in January.

“He has been back training now for a few weeks having been injured more or less from the start of pre-season which didn’t help things.

“Maybe the ideal window to try to move Stephen to get regular football would have been in July and August.

“Unfortunately due to injury that kind of held him back. He is a paid player for us and while he is still here will be under consideration.”

But McInnes added: “From Stephen’s personal point of view and his family situation we will try to find a club in January down south.”

“He is back fit but we choose to try to pick other players who are going to be here longer term to play.”

Gleeson hasn’t featured for Ireland under Mick McCarthy and his last appearance was a scoring one in the 3-1 friendly defeat to Mexico in New Jersey in June 2017.
