Stephen Fry says trolls are like 'lemon on a paper cut' in wake of Caroline Flack's death

Stephen Fry has spoken out about his experiences with online trolls in the wake of Caroline Flack's death on Saturday, February15.

The former Love Island presenter took her own life, a coroner confirmed in an inquest today.

In the wake of the star's tragic death by suicide, the subject of online trolls has been heavily debated.

Appearing today on This Morning, comedian Stephen Fry said people didn't realise the effect their words could have on a public person.

Host Ruth Langsford asked him about his decision to take a break from Twitter after he fell foul to online trolls.

Stephen, who has 12.7million Twitter followers, said: "I'm terribly sensitive" and admitted he needed to take a break but is now back online.

He went on to say that in the past, people would share their thoughts on a celebrity "with family in the kitchen" before going on to say "we have an opinion on the personality of people we've never met".

Getting impassioned, he added: "People don't realise it cuts you deep - it's like lemon on a paper cut."

The former QI presenter went on to say: "It's not particularly good for your soul if people are praising you, either" and said "you have to try and be real about this."

Ruth asked if he had engaged with online trolls in the past, to which Stephen admitted he had occasionally but said it was important to try and ignore them because some people "enjoyed" being cruel online.

Star Caroline Flack died in her east London flat at the weekend.

The 40-year-old's family confirmed former Love Island presenter Caroline had taken her own life 18 days before she was due to stand trial for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend, Lewis Burton, back in December.

Caroline had pleaded not guilty to assault and boyfriend Lewis maintained her innocence.
