Stephen Fry has officially married his partner Elliot Spencer, less than two weeks after revealing the couple planned to wed.

The 57-year-old-actor and presenter posted a picture on Twitter of him and partner Spencer, 27, signing a marriage register – thought to be in a registry office in Dereham, Norfolk - with the accompanying caption: “Gosh. @ElliotGSpencer and I go into a room as two people, sign a book and leave as one. Amazing.”

In the photograph, Fry and Spencer wore matching green carnations, a reference to the writer Oscar Wilde, whose 19th Century followers would wear a green carnation on their lapel. Wilde, who was imprisoned for gross indecency due to an affair with the son of the Marquis of Queensberry in 1895, was one of Fry’s most famous acting roles.

Fry later joked that the couple’s vows had been witnessed by an Oscar Wilde doll. “Oh and @ElliotGSpencer and I had our vows witnessed by a mini Oscar Wilde. Because one should,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Fry had hinted that the wedding would take place by tweeting that he would be attending a banquet before attending a football match.

On the paperwork, Fry gave his occupation as “actor” while Spencer was listed as a writer. Both said they were currently living in Norfolk.

Fry’s former comedy partner, House star Hugh Laurie, tweeted his congratulations to the couple.

Illusionist Derren Brown responded to Fry’s tweet, saying ““Gor.geous xxx”, and Sherlock star Mark Gatiss tweeted: “Wonderful! Congratulations to you both. Xx”

Stephen Fry had revealed that he planned to marry eleven days ago. The actor had been dating Spencer, a comedian, since last summer. Fry wrote on Twitter at the time: “Oh. It looks as though a certain cat is out of a certain bag. I’m very very happy of course but had hoped for a private wedding. Fat chance!”
