Stephen Fleming in line to be named head coach of Nottingham-based Hundred team

Stephen Fleming looks set to return to Nottingham next year as head coach of the Trent Bridge based team in the Hundred.

Talks have been held with the former Nottinghamshire and New Zealand captain and while no formal agreement is in place, Fleming is understood to be the preferred candidate for the job, although director of cricket Mick Newell could not confirm if Fleming had been offered the job.

"We've made enquiries for a head coach. All the other coaches we want to come from this area. We think that's the right model for this competition," he said.

"Fleming has an expressed an interest, as have a lot of coaches around the world and we've spoken to him."

Fleming is the current coach of Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, while he was also in charge of the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.

Another former Notts man is now in charge of the Stars in David Hussey.

The ex-Australia batsman was keen to be part of the coaching set up at the new Hundred team, which is set to be called Trent Rockets in a competition which will begin next summer.

However, that looks unlikely with the remaining coaching positions set to be filled from staff already working for the three counties who come under the umbrella of the Hundred team - Notts, Leicestershire and Derbyshire.

From a Notts point of view, that means assistant coach Paul Franks, bowling coach Andy Pick or second team coach Ant Botha could be part of the set-up.

Head coach Peter Moores has been linked with the head coach's role at the Old Trafford franchise, making it less likely he would assist Fleming.
