Stephen Dobbie smashes another target as QoS hero and sons complete brilliant NHS fundraiser

Stephen Dobbie has made his name as a striker who doesn’t just hit the target - he likes to blow them away.

The Queen of the South hero has been banging them in for years in Dumfries and before that at Bolton, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Swansea and Blackpool among others.

Now the 37-year-old hitman has turned his sharp shooting skills towards the coronavirus battle by raising thousands of pounds in honour of the wonderful work being carried out by medical staff across the country.

As footballers up and down the country tear their hair out at the lack of action Dobbie and his sons Jack, 10, and Maxwell, 7, decided to shave theirs off to raise money for the NHS Charities COVID-19 Urgent Appeal.

And after setting a target of £1000 the striker - who has struck 229 career goals in 570 matches - and his boys have raised a remarkable total of £3800 which rises to over £4600 after gift aid is attached.

Dobbie - whose wife Susanne fell ill with symptoms of the virus a fortnight ago - said: “It’s an incredible figure and we’re just glad to be able to help the wonderful work of the NHS.

“This is much bigger than football and it’s just scary when every morning you wake up and see how many people have died around the world.

“It was about trying to explain to the kids what is happening in the world and how many people are helping, the doctors, nurses and volunteers making sacrifices for other people.

"It’s to give the kids perspective.

“They were out clapping the NHS doctors and nurses the other night along with everyone else.

“They then came up with the idea of shaving our heads for charity.

“I’ve not had a skinhead since my first spell at Queens. The boys keep telling me it’s going to grow back this time!”
