Stephen Dobbie announces emotional Queen of the South exit as striker ends legendary Palmerston stay

Legendary Queen of the South striker Stephen Dobbie has announced he will take to the Palmerston pitch for the final time on Friday.

The 36-year-old has scored 166 times in 282 appearances for the club and is widely renowned as one of their best players of all time.

He netted 55 times in his first spell between 2006-09 before leaving for Swansea where he helped fire them to the Premier League.

After spells with Blackpool, Brighton and Crystal Palace among others, he returned to Palmerston in 2016 where he rediscovered his best form.

He topped the Championship scoring charts in 2017 and 2018 and his 43 goals in 2018/19 was the best ever total for a Queens player in a single season.

A wood carving statue outside of Palmerston honours Dobbie alongside fellow Queens legends Allan Ball and Billy Houliston.

He will play his final game for the club when they take on Dundee in their final Championship match on Friday.

Dobbie said via the QOTS website : "It’s with a heavy heart that I’m announcing that my time at Queens has come to an end and that this Friday will sadly be my last appearance in a Queens shirt.

"What an amazing time I’ve had. I have loved every minute of my seven and a half years.

"I made my debut against Dundee so it’s fitting my last appearance will be against them. My first ever goal for the club came against Dundee so fingers crossed history will repeat itself and my last will be too when we play them on Friday night.

"There have been many highlights during my time.

"My statue at the arena, being inducted into the Queens Hall of Fame, becoming the club’s second top ever goalscorer and beating the record for most goals in a season to name a few."

He concluded: "Queens isn’t just another football club to me - I’ve become a supporter myself. The way in which the club and the fans have embraced me and my family will always hold a special place in my heart.

"Most of all, thank you to the fans. I will miss hearing your songs and your cheers whenever I put the ball in the back of net for you.

"All the best for the future and I’ll be back at Palmy when I can."
