Pundit Stephen Craigan blasted Kemar Roofe's Rangers strike against Brondby as a "horrendous decision" — before sheepishly walking back his assertion after a replay.
Ibrox was sent ecstatic when VAR overturned an offside call but in living rooms and commentary gantries alike there was confusion.
Nobody was more puzzled than Craigan, who on BT Sport asserted Roofe was offside when he tapped in the rebound after Alfredo Morelos saw his header saved.
He roared: “I have to say, that’s a horrendous decision. When you bring in VAR, you get the decision right.
“It’s not even close! I think even Kemar Roofe put the ball in the net thinking, ‘I’m offside’.
“It just shows you have to put it in the net, just in case there’s an incompetent VAR official.
“They won’t be complaining, it’s not Rangers’ fault! But VAR, wow."
Former Motherwell man Craigan's confusion deepened the more he tried to understand the call, which followed Leon Balogun's headed opener in the first half.
“You would just love to know what they’re thinking," he continued, "or what they’re looking at. I know initially they had paused and were looking to see if Roofe was offside from the cross from Aribo.

"But the fact they’ve allowed play to go on, would suggest that he’s not.
“But when Morelos makes contact with the ball, and the goalkeeper makes the save, Roofe’s back is clearly offside.”
But everything changed when a previously unseen angle showed UEFA's top team - Pol van Boekel and Jochem Kamphuis of the Netherlands - were spot on.
And Craigan was big enough to hold his hands up and admit he'd been too quick to judge.
With tongue in cheek, he said: “I stand corrected! I can’t wait until VAR comes to Scotland, it’s the best invention in football.
“Sometimes you have to hold your hands up. But initially, it looked offside."
In fairness, a fleeting glance across social media shows the pundit was far from the only one who was fooled.
